THE BEST CAKES TO SMASH ARE PLAIN VANILLA SPONGE CAKES.
They are very soft and easy for little hands to break up.
Make sure the icing is nice and soft so that your little one can actually smash their cake on their own.
Size of the cake matters too! From my experience 6 inches cake is perfect!
If you go any bigger than that it'll just look too big next to your little baby.
AVOID DARK CHOCOLATE AND RED FROSTING.
You might not like the brown and read smears all over their faces and hands in your photographs.
